Before I go to bed, I remember to brush my teeth. I understand the importance of maintaining the enamel, healthy gums and removing plaque from my mouth. I have done this every morning and night for 33+ plus years. And it makes you think…how many hours will I dedicate to caring for my teeth over a lifetime? If we go by the recommended 4-minutes of daily brushing that’s nearly 1,440 minutes a year.
That’s 79 days over a lifetime
This practice is something we know directly correlates to longevity and vibrant health. Without it, we have the social limitations associated with having a mouth full of black rocks. But I digress. I think about this before bed ritual and the time we spend on it, and I can’t for the life of me figure out why no such practice exists to teaching kids to brush their brains?
The brain is the mothership
It runs ALL the systems of the body – or chooses to send everything crashing into dysfunction. The immune system, circulatory, and musculature of the body are driven by its commands. How we think, feel, listen and respond. The way we love and how we hate. The speed at which we walk, run, climb and how we grow. Unique ways in which we to build and thrive. Variations in how we hurt and how we cry. A thousand different ways we each go about learning. It’s really incredible!
I AM NOT suggesting we throw away the time we have set aside for tooth maintenance. What I AM suggesting, at the bare minimum, is that we treat the brain with the same respect if not MORE as a tooth. Let’s consider teaching the next generation, the one saddled with more problems, debt, dysfunction, and body image distortion than any before, how to clean, care for and floss the brain!

That’s an observation, not a judgment.

Video games and Heart Rate Variability
Before you scream, “Stop, we have enough of those in the house,” hear me out. One powerful tool I’ve used for increasing cognition and awareness is Heart rate variability or HRV. This incredible technology is used to sync the heart and brain in their orchestral dance of beats and focused thought. The assumption that a healthy heart beats like an even metronome is flawed. It’s actually a fractal time signature between beats that dictates a healthy heart. Think 1 second, 1.2, .9, 1.1…and so on.
Measure the beats:
This practice of measuring the difference between heartbeats shows the nervous system tone and a calm mind. Through a simple heart monitor, or even more recently the OURA ring, readings can be measured and then consciously manipulated through deep breathing and intention. Think meditation with a biofeedback element.
I use a sensor from Heart Math: This phone app and sensor show a fluctuating circle or grid, the game involves shifting the red light to turn green through steady focus and heart focused breathing.

The implications are limitless. What if we could unfold the twists and turns in the nervous system before they fester for a lifetime, stopping the considerable and sometimes irreversible damage. Thus, turning the drug addict-in-training to the ballerina she always dreamt of becoming as a child or steer the engineer free from a life of potential alcoholism as a product of managing his feelings in a healthy way.

Physical movement and participation in games is something any child will jump on board with. What if we combined the “clapping classic” Paddy-Cake with the modern science of Emotional Freedom Tapping?

Shield your cell phone and unplug that WIFI router:
In this instance, it’s not what we are adding to a self-care practice, but rather what we’re taking away. In an attempt to not overwhelm everyone I thought this might be an easy action step and very simple to execute.
EMF or electromagnetic frequencies are highly detrimental to brain function, immune health and motor skill development in the body. I’m sure you instinctively protect your kids from gasoline fumes, chloroform or lead so why not electromagnetic emissions? They are invisible and odorless and we tend to pay less attention to electromagnetic radiation but according to the World Health Organization, they are in the same category of toxins like lead, exhaust fumes and chloroform.
Children are at higher risk:
The danger lies in the fact that their skulls are thinner, their brain tissue is less resistant and contains more fluid; therefore, it’s more absorbent to toxic influences. Kids are generally under higher risk if they are exposed to any kind of toxin or carcinogen, including electromagnetic emissions.

EMF waves also delay the brain’s natural cycle of getting into the REM phase of sleep.
Sleep deprived kids have problems with memory, attention, and ability to learn new information. Also from a scientific observation: the tendency to behave like little fuckers increases by 79%.
- Before you go to bed turn off the WIFI router broadcasting a signal through the house. Chart how much better you and your kid’s sleep. I can say for myself my eyes are far less puffy in the morning when I get out of bed. If you are lazy and like things on a self-regulating system you can buy a timer for the outlet running the internet so it turns off and on at a specific time.
- Make sure there are no electrical devices around their beds and use a Greenwave filter in the light sockets surrounding the bed to clear up dirty light sockets.
- If your kids are using an iPad (one of the strongest forms of EMF pollution…it’s like a giant cell phone) Buy an EMF protection cover that blocks 80% of the dirty electricity coming off the device. Like this one.
- Likewise get one for your cell phones like this one or a sticker to minimize the exposure.

I could write a book on food that’s good for the brain but many of my favorite authors have already done that… and honestly, the data and information backing it up looks like a bigger version of Mt. Everest.
“The M.I.N.D diet, shortened from Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay, was created by researchers at Rush University Medical Center and the Harvard School Of Public Health. A hybrid of the popular Mediterranean and the DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diets, the researchers studied eating patterns that reduces the risk Alzheimer’s disease, and conducted cognitive tests of 960 adults over the space of nine years, tracking their dietary habits.
The MIND diet encourages a high consumption of 10 “brain-healthy” food groups such as green leafy vegetables, other vegetables, nuts, berries, and fish. It limited consumption of unhealthy food groups like red meats, butter and stick margarine, cheese, sweets, and processed foods. The findings, published in Alzheimer’s & Dementia: The Journal of the Alzheimer’s Association, revealed that older adults who adhered strictly to the MIND diet faced a 53% lower risk of Alzheimer’s, and those who followed it moderately saw their risk lower by 35%.”
I think the important thing to remember is if you are starting your kids day with cereal…consider this article the proverbial slap upside the head. not only are these cereal grains filled with gluten but also covered in GlyphosateRoundnd Up) and starting your child’s day off with weed killer ends badly for everyone.

So that’s pretty much all the amazing shit I can pack into one article. I really do believe there is space for brain care and brain health. The truth is I have about 50 suggestions, but I wanted to give you four to start. If you are noticing behavioral issues in your kids and you think there may be something here give it a shot. If genetics is the gun, the environment is the trigger…take your power in controlling the little we can.
