Question:” Freddie, I just recently started to add green juice to my diet and really like the energy boost I get! My problem is that it’s so damn expensive! I have found a deli next to my house which is half the price as “Juice generation”……why am I paying double the price for same sized juice? And do I need to?”
First off, Let me say that I love juicing. It is an excellent way to get a booster of vitamins and nutrients without any taxation on my digestive system. With all the fiber taken away from a meal, the juiced nutrients from your food is free to pass straight into the blood stream in the stomach and upper part of the GI tract.
It’s best to focus on green juices. Make 90-95% percent of your concoction in the kitchen vegetable based, if not all. Sweeten with a quarter of a green apple, grapefruit, lemon or lime. Aim for low glycemic index fruit. One thing that I mention avoiding in the quest for optimal health is sugar…and while fruit is a whole food, it can easily become a problem if consumed in excess. Juicing fruit, is like taking the brakes off your car, (the brakes are the fiber) your going to jack your blood sugar beyond what it needs to be and then be chasing that sugar spike all day. From a logistical standpoint…… how much fruit would you come across as a hunter gatherer between October and April in upstate new york! I’m waiting patiently for your answer…….None! Even in the summer months wild fruit, has a quarter of the sugar we are used to in the farmed apples and oranges and other supermarket favorites we have become accustomed to. Fun fact!

Organic VS. Non……Now it’s true that nutritional differences are minimal in organic and non organic veggies. It’s actually what you are not getting with organic veggies that you should be concerned with. The organic veggies are grown without harmful chemicals, pesticides, weed killers……did you want a full serving of round up in that meal?
Fun Fact: Roundup stops weed growth by inhibiting mineral absorption so they can’t grow. Miraculously it does the same thing in you and me. Keep eating it….. if you would like limited magnesium, copper and other essential cell function and dense bones. In addition at 100 times less the concentration in agriculture it can causes endocrine issues and possible effects on reproduction. So there’s that. (2)
But what about washing? Can I clean my greens? Can’t I wash my ruttagbaga? What if they peel and scrub my veggies ? I’m strong no one scrubs like me!!!!
Great question: if you look at a piece of celery under a microscope, it’s going to look like a porous sponge…..this is a good representation of the fibrous nature of vegetables……..so scrub and wash and peel the outside all you want, this veggie which has been sprayed and coated form sprout to adult sized celery is screwed! (italics notates the word be yelled in a mike Meyers fashioned Scottish accent-please re-read with this effect). It’s like trying to get the germs out of a sponge…”it ain’t gonna happen my friend!” The chemicals are on the inside baby.
The Price: Listen…..I know juicing is not cheap. But neither are drinks at the bar, excessively overpriced cable packages, shoes that fill up our closets, multiple hand bags, designer sneakers or new toys. These things are all choices. I would implore you to make a choice to invest in your health. It’s one of the true things that really matter. On your death bed I know you won’t ask for someone to brings your favorite baseball card and framed diploma from harvard….you will ask for your family and loved ones. Knowing that…… let’s be the strongest, healthiest, most vibrant version of yourself…..so you can and enjoy those amazing relationships unfetter with poor health…..juicing will help to align this……material purchases will not. #truth #neverasugarcoating
The Take Away: Juice organic, if you are going to do it, like all things do it right. Go easy on the fruit….juicing a quarter of an apple is enough to sweeten most concoctions. In addition lemons and Limes add a perfect counterpoint to the bitterness of kale and chard.

This is a handy tool when traveling or in the instance you want to juice a bunch of veggies in one sitting and have for the week.
